MTM: Project Based Teaching

The Multimedia students work on modules or projects. They have about three weeks to complete one project which gives them one credit.  By the end of the course they students will complete five modules and receive five credits if they passed each module.

Formative assessment practises are integrated into project-based assignments.  Students are required to meet with me to receive feedback early in the process.  These meetings provide a framework to utilize assessment of their work and ideas for further learning.  I view the discussions themselves as learning opportunities as the students' voice their thought processes and showcase their skill sets, which provides opportunity for reflection and sparks new innovation and creativity.

My students enjoy working on their projects as they know the expectations for each step of their three to four week project. Here is a photo of me meeting with one of my high school students to review a rubric for his graphic design work.

GLOBE: Laos Outreach

I have participated in the GLOBE Laos Outreach program for the past four years. This program allows TIS teachers an opportunity to visit Luang Prabang and work with local teachers. The goals of the program is to give leaders opportunities to be educators. We host a workshop to show the local Laotian teachers skills to teach inquiry based hands-on lessons.  This program has been very successful and it is growing each year. This October I was the leader of the group and I helped to facilitate the travel and logistics for the workshops in Laos. It is a rewarding experience and over the years I have made new friends and created strong bonds with several organizations there.

MTM Student Work: Aliee's Designs

At TIS I have a Wordpress site that I use to share content with students and also to display student work. I found it very helpful to have the students create their own page and show off their work. The students find pride in having their final work displayed on the site and each day at the start of class we take a moment to look at the variety of work students are creating. This morning we were celebrating Ailee's poster designs. She worked on three different ideas and designed these posters as part of her final design project.

The Best Part Of Me

A collaborative project with writing & photography

Recently the Grade Three class completed a writing project based on Wendy's Ewald's book, The Best Part of Me. The Grade Three students needed to pick a body part that they felt was their best part. They had to write a short piece to explain why they feel this way.  This became a collaborative project as the high school multimedia students were partnered with a Grade Three student and asked to be their official photographer.

The multimedia students were given the challange to create an interesting and meaningful image of the chosen body part. Photographers were encouraged to try different camera angels, different lighting styles and get as close as possible to the subject. The results were stunning. Each Grade Three student had an unique photograph to help the tell their own personal story.  The high school students were able to show off their photography knowledge as well as demonstrate their leadership skills as they organised each student for the photo shoot of the "best of me".

MTM: Water Drop Photography

The TIS multimedia (MTM) students are currently working on a challenging photography assignment to capture water drops. This assignment allows the students to work with the manual settings on the camera and to practise using the correct exposure levels. It is a challenging shot to capture.

Here is a photo of Kenny at the water drop station working on setting up the shot to capture the drop!

MAM: Client Meeting

The TIS Marketing & Management (MAM) high school students are working on a collaborative project to create a short 2 minute video commercial for an outside client. The students have been "hired" by Blissful Coloane Market to come up with a concept to sell the upcoming Farmers Market in December.

Here is a photo of the students at their client meeting to pitch their storyboard and concept. They are able to get feedback from the client about the direction of their story and what to include in their video.
